Why goldie died

When we were young, the only pets we ever had were fish.
Quite a variety came through our house but only the Silver dollars survived in the end.
All the goldfish died, as hard as we tried to keep the tank healthy.
We studied them well, and managed to tell them all apart; enough to give them names.
Some mornings, we'd look for so-and-so and realise he/she was floating on the top.

But now I know why we couldn't keep them well.
The other evening on the radio, there was a goldfish expert as a guest on Radio 2, answering all sorts of questions listeners had sent in.
And here's what I recall of it:
"Do goldfish have a memory of 3 seconds?"
Ans: No, goldfish don't have short term memory, they are actually pretty
smart. Someone from Plymouth University did a long term experiment on training
goldfish to press a button for their food. It was probably a myth made up to
reassure people that goldfish don't feel they are in a small space when they are
in their tank.

"Does the goldfish grow as big as its tank?"
Ans: No, another myth.

Finally, I realised why our fish died.
The best water for goldfish is hard water (water full of lime/calcium), the kind we get in Basingstoke and certain regions of the UK - we have to filter all the water we drink.
The water we get in Singapore is soft water, which isn't the best type of water for the fish.
The other problem with water from our taps is the amount of chlorine gas in it.
That is why people leave water standing (to let the gases free) before pouring it in the tank.

The mystery is solved. *takes a bow*
